Officials in Douglas County reported a fire in the Larkspur area late Wednesday afternoon, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Concern about fire in the region, approaching the Memorial Day weekend, led to a large response from several first responder agencies.

Smoke coming from a train along the Interstate 25 corridor drew the attention of the sheriff’s office along with first responders from Larkspur and Castle Rock, as well as Jackson 105 fire personnel. The scene, near Spruce Mountain Road, led to a traffic closure in the Larkspur area that has since been lifted.

“DCSO, Larkspur Fire, Castle Rock Fire, Jackson 105 Fire all on scene of a train fire,” the sheriff’s office posted on X at about 6 p.m. May 22.

No fire was found as of about 7 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

The off ramp from southbound I-25 to Spruce Mountain Road was closed, along with the Upper Lake Gulch Road exit. The train was blocking the crossing at Perry Park Avenue in the Larkspur area.

No injuries were reported, said Deputy Cocha Heyden, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

All roads are open as of around 7 p.m., and the train is no longer blocking any crossings or roads, the sheriff’s office posted on X.
