Two Franktown firefighters were airlifted after a water tanker, also called a tender, was involved in a roll-over accident while responding to a housefire in southwest Douglas County on Aug. 7.
The accident occurred north of a Jackson 105 fire station at 435 N. Perry Park Road and was reported at approximately 7:30 p.m., said Franktown Fire Protection District spokeswoman Kim Spuhler. No civilians were involved in the single-vehicle crash, according to a tweet from Franktown Fire.
“They were responding emergency with lights and sirens to a fully-engulfed housefire,” Spuhler said.
The two airlifted firefighters were the only individuals in the tanker, which carries 3,000 gallons of water.
The firefighters had to be extricated, or cut out of the tanker, which took roughly 35 minutes. They were transported to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. By the morning of Aug. 8, one was released the hospital and both were in stable condition.
The accident was discovered by South Metro Fire Marshal Anthony Valdez, who was also responding to the house fire.
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash, but has not determined its cause, Spuhler said. Perry Park Road is closed near Wolfensberger as the investigation continues.
The fire that the tanker was responding to had fully engulfed a home located at 5800 Pine Cliff Ave, southwest of Sedalia, by the time fire crews arrived, said South Metro Fire Rescue spokesman Eric Hurst.
Dispatch received multiple 911 calls and smoke was visible for miles.
Crews from South Metro Fire Rescue, West Douglas, Jackson 105, Castle Rock, Larkspur and Franktown all responded to the incident. Jackson 105 was first on scene followed by West Douglas.
The two-story, single-family home was the only structure affected. An unknown number of people who were home at the time the fire began but safely evacuated with no injuries, Hurst said.
West Douglas will lead the fire investigation, which will likely begin the morning of Aug. 8, Hurst said.
