More than 80,000 used books, DVDs, CDs, children’s books and more will be for sale at the annual Whale of a Used Book Sale, which returns Oct. 17-20 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. 6th Ave., Golden.

The sale is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. Admission is free every day.

Early birds can start shopping at 8 a.m. Oct. 18 for a $10 fee. On Oct. 19, teachers, Friends of Jefferson Public Libraries members and Jefferson County employees receive half off on all purchase; ID is required. Oct, 20 is bag day, with a bag of books starting at $6.

Friends of Jefferson Public Libraries will be allowed to shop early during a preview night, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Those wishing to join the group can sign up for a membership at the door.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the sale.

“The twice-yearly Whale of a Used Book Sale is always popular with book lovers from throughout Jefferson County and beyond,” Jo Schantz, executive director of the Jefferson County Library Foundation, said in a news release. “Each year, our (sale) helps raise tens of thousands of dollars, which in turn benefit the programs of Jefferson County Public Library that are offered free to the public.”

Volunteers will help set up books in the children’s department, work in the children’s department, work as cashiers and work in the ‘save’ section, among other jobs. Volunteers will get free lunch and snacks, and for every four-hour shift, volunteers may take two free books.
