State 5A soccer: Legacy's season comes to an end

Valor holds off stubborn Lighting in opening round

HIGHLANDS RANCH -- Valor Christian clawed its way to a 4-2, first-round win over Legacy High School in the state 5A girls soccer playoffs June 15.

The match was on the Eagles' field.

All of the scoring came in the second half. Molly Tamborra of the Eagles and Katey Beaver of the Lightning traded goals in the 57th and 58th minutes of the match, respectively. 

Valor's Mandy Patrick scored in the 63rd minute to give the Eagles the lead for good. Four minutes later, Ajanae Respass scored the first of her two goals -- off a header following a free kick -- to give Valor some breathing room.

Legacy wasn't quite finished.  The Lightning barely missed a goal in the 71st minute when the shot bounced off the goal post. A rebound shot went over top of the net. LHS kept the pressure on, and it paid off when Julianna Hayward from 20 yards out in the 77th minute.

Respass scored her second goal with a minute to play in the match.

The Eagles' goalkeeper, Keeley Kroonenberg, made six saves.

Legacy finished the season with a record of 8-3.
