State 5A baseball: Mountain Vista turns back Lightning


AURORA -- Mountain Vista scored four runs in the third inning and beat Legacy 9-2 in the opening game of the state 5A baseball playoffs June 18 at Cherry Creek High School.

The loss sends the Lightning into the consolation bracket and a game against rival Fairview at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at Eaglecrest High School.

Mountain Vista's Sam Krysa single and eventually scored on a Blake Young base hit. An infield error brought home another run, and Travis Sprinkle's doubled home two more runs.

The two teams split runs over the first two innings. LHS' Cole Claridge singled and rode home on an infield grounder by Clayton Schuck in the second inning. Mountain Vista's Blake Young's RBI came by way of a first-inning sacrifice fly.

Seth Howard reached on an error in the seventh inning, and Trey Dunn's infield single triggered a three-run rally that gamve the Eagles some breathing room.  Claridge's sacrtifice fly scored the lightning's last run in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Claridge had two of Legacy's four hits. Sehr struck out six in 6 1/3 innings of work. Young had two hits and drove in two,. Sprinkle finished with two RBIs.

Legacy faces Fairview in a consolation round game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at Eaglecrest High School. Fairview lost its first-round game to Heritage by a score of 5-1.
