LAKEWOOD -- Riverdale Ridge's Braylen Fenderson etched his name into the school record books June 26.
He became the school's first individual state champion by winning the title in the 100-meter dash.
Fenderson, a senior, clocked 10.96 seconds in the finals to edge out Grand Junction Central's Justin Blanton by 0.04 of a second. Fenderson went into the state meet as the top seed in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Fenderson finished fourth in the 200-meters in a time of 22.27 seconds.
The last day of the state track meet was quite something for Frederick's Ryan Chacon, too. The senior, who rehabbed a partially torn meniscus the past 3 1/2 months, won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.96 seconds.
"Crazy I pulled that off," Chacon tweeted. "My hamstring has been pretty tight and wasn’t feeling the best. I realized when got off the turn that it was my race, so I jsut went for it,"
He finished second in the 400-meters (48.13 seconds) and fourth in the 100-meters (11.2).
Chacon capped off his day by anchoring the Warriors' 4-by-400-meter relay team to a state title. He, Wyatt Schroth, Alexander Carrillo and Garrett Colvin finished in a time of 3:23.78.
