AURORA -- Holy Family's Jessica Mason is threatening to make the statse 4A grls golf tournament at Common Ground Golf Course her own private tournament.
Mason fired a 3-under 69 in the tournament's opening day June 21. That was good enough for an eight-shot lead on Timbre Shehee of Mead High School.
Mason had three birdues and an eagle en route to her 69. The eagle came on the par 5, 15th hole, which measures 454 yards. It followed a bogey on the par 3 16th hole. Mason had one birdie on the front nine. That came on the par 5, 421-yard seventh hole.
The Tigers' Madison Rooney was in 30th place after the first round. She fired a 91. Ansley Schnelle finished her opening round with a 103, and Liesel Heitz was 34-over par through 16 holes.
Tournament pairings for the Tuesday, June 22, round will be announced later.
