Sidewalk. Sidewalk. Who's got the sidewalk?

Sidewalk. Sidewalk. Who’s got the sidewalk?

A missing sidewalk caught the attention of Fort Lupton City Council during its May 5 meeting.

Councilman Tommy ?Holton wondered what happened to the sidewalk on the east side of Fort Lupton High School and along Denver Avenue from Cemetery Lane to Reynolds Street.

"It was supposed to be part of a project in a quarter-of-a-million-dollar bond," he said. "It never happened."

“The sidewalk was in discussion when planning the bond as we were considering expanding the street to allow for student drop off on the library side of the building,” Re-8 Superintendent Alan Kaylor said. “As pricing came in, that option was dropped, and the north teacher parking lot was built.”

Public Works Director Roy Vestal said the district changed its plans and "precluded that sidewalk portion."

"They didn't do anything that they showed us," Vestal said. "They didn't modify the parking lot. Our understanding was they were going to do curb and gutter work."

"The project didn't happen," Holton said. "I don't understand why."

"I see kids walking in the street when it snows," Mayor Zo Stieber said.

The two groups are scheduled to have a combined meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25.

Council also approved its role in a streetscape plan for Denver Avenue between Third and Fourth streets.

Part of the Colorado Department of Transportation grant would go to a dedicated bike lane, the first of its kind in the downtown area. Another piece  could include bump outs and ADA ramps.

"We wanted to be careful and be sure  we submitted the application through an eligible entity," said planner Alyssa Knutson.

If approved, FLURA would implement the program and provide a 20 percent monetary match.
