Re-8 board composition remains up in the air

Board shrinks to five members; Griego steps aside

On a night when the Weld Re-8 board of education couldn't agree on what its future composition should look like, it announced it had to fill a vacancy, too.

Board member Kehle Griego stepped down earlier this month. She was not available for comment. But a letter read into the record by board President Susan Browne said Griego resigned because of business-related reasons.

The board was leaning toward a five director, two at-large member makeup for most of the spring. But the board turned that idea down by a vote of 3-2 during a June 24 meeting.

"While I am not opposed to the idea of two at-large positions, I agree with director (Cody) Leblanc that the way
the lines were drawn does not ensure that Dacono would have representation in the district," said board member Jaime Sierra. "Dacono  could be represented in the director district proposal, but it would not be required.  And because one of our five  schools is in Dacono, I believe representation should be required."
The board heard from one prospective candidate for Griego's spot on the board. Cassie Rodriguez is a Fort Lupton High School graduate. She said two of her main areas of focus would be teacher retention and overall student success.

"In my career, I have to maintain confidentiality," she told the board during public comment. "I've seen firsthand the impact the board has on the community, and I thought this would be a chance to make a positive impact."

The deadline to apply for Griego's spot on the board is Tuesday, July 26. Email The board set public interviews for Thursday, Aug. 12.
