On-demand lawn care service expanding in Douglas County

Company seeks to be similar to ride-sharing services


A Nashville-based tech company connecting homeowners with lawn care services is expanding into the Denver area including in Highlands Ranch and Parker, with the goal of mirroring companies like Uber and Lyft.

GreenPal, which started in 2012, allows homeowners to post their address and lawn care needs and then landscapers bid for the gig.

Co-Founder Gene Caballero, who worked in lawn care in his high school and college years, said he became interested in the idea during the time that ride-sharing services started to become popular on the West Coast.

“If people are willing to have a stranger pick them up, at some point they’d do the same with lawn care,” he said.

The company launched in Denver last summer and Colorado Springs this summer. They open in new markets when they begin to see homeowners from the area logging in to find services in their community, Caballero said.

Once a homeowner places their property up for bidding, they can look at reviews and rates for the companies interested in servicing them and decide which they want to choose. After the job is complete, the landscapers will submit a photo of the work and then the homeowner is charged, as long as they approve that it was done correctly. The vendor and client are never required to meet in person.

The company aims to create quicker connections between clients and providers than the traditional approach.

“I think Uber and Lyft have kind of conditioned homeowners for wanting things now and not later,” Caballero said. “It goes in with the consumer mindset now.”

So far, about 20 vendors and 300 potential clients have signed up in Parker, Caballero said.

While most of what the landscapers provide is lawn mowing, some also offer other services like hedge trimming, mulch placement, leaf pickup and snow removal.

GreenPal, which collects 5% from the vendors for each job completed, strives to simplify business for the local lawn care companies in their jurisdictions.

“We handle demand creation, scheduling, route optimization and payment,” Caballero said.

When vendors log in, they can see a recommended route and schedule for the day’s appointments along with expected revenue for the day, week or month.

Almost all of the service provided by GreenPal is residential, with about 5% on commercial properties.
