Masks optional for Adams 12 and 27J, but required for Westminster

North metro school districts announce COVID-19 protocols before start of school year

Adams 12 Five Star Schools and 27J Schools will not require students to wear masks indoors this fall, but Westminster Public Schools will.

All three districts will not require students to be vaccinated, but strongly encourage it for those who are eligible.

27J Schools announced its  back-to-school plan on Monday, while Adams 12 and Westminster Public Schools announced their plans on Friday after the Tri-County Health Department released new mask guidance. The public health department for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties urged residents to wear masks indoors to counteract the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

“Masks are recommended for all students, regardless of vaccination status, but are not required. The district strongly encourages masks for all in our buildings,” read a statement from Adams 12. “We will honor the decision of parents when it comes to their children wearing or not wearing a mask in school.”

27J Schools’ plan struck a similar tone, as opposed to Westminster’s announcement.

“All students, staff and teachers will be required to wear masks when indoors. The district has a stockpile of masks available for them who need them,” read a Westminster Public Schools statement.

Students in all three school districts are required to wear masks on busses.

To encourage students ages 12 and above to get vaccinated, Adams 12 noted that the Thornton Fire Department is hosting a vaccination clinic on August 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Thornton High School.
