Letter to the editor: Stay the course in DCSD

As a public education advocate, parent of 2 DCSD graduates and the grandparent of future DougCo students, I have been witness to the transition and progress of our school district. Under the leadership of a truly nonpartisan school board, after only 4 years, we have finally begun to see improvements in teacher retention, community trust and even PSAT and SAT scores remained high during the pandemic. After many years of insufficient funding, a bond and mill levy was passed to upgrade, maintain and improve the safety all of our schools, both neighborhood and charter. The pandemic response thoughtfully relied on the advice of public health professionals and the school board patiently allowed dissenting voices to be heard.

Now is not the time to reverse course and return to defunding initiatives in the form of vouchers. The intrusion of politics in education needs to once again be rejected.

The best choice we have to maintain and improve our school district is to re-elect Krista Holtzmann and Kevin Leung. Candidate Ruby Martinez will help improve the board by bringing professional nursing and mental health experience. Juli Watkins will round out the team with a strong business, school volunteer leadership experience, and current parent perspective. Our vote is our voice. Please support the candidates that will support our students, schools, and community: Holtzmann, Leung, Martinez, and Watkins.
