Letter to the editor: Hold colleges accountable

Hold colleges accountable

I won’t be voting for any candidate who supports college loan forgiveness through a new law, bankruptcy or any other means. I and my children worked to pay for college costs and to pay off loans that they and I took. It wasn’t easy or free, we worked for it. The Obama administration prosecuted for-profit colleges that loaned money to institutions that extended loans to students for degrees that proved to be worthless. It is only fair that all other institutions should be held to that same standard. If they accepted monies from students who were then unable to obtain gainful employment because of their de facto worthless degrees then colleges should be held responsible for the loans, not taxpayers.

Many of these institutions have endowments worth many billions of dollars, which they should be required to use to pay for the worthless degrees they conferred and have profited from. They need to be held accountable for their failures, and not be allowed to foist it off on blameless taxpayers.
