We live in a time where people tend to take sides. This month, one year ago, I wanted to escape from negativity and partisanship. Where to turn? I went onto the Highlands Ranch Rotary Club website (rotaryclubhr.org) and let them know that I wanted to attend a luncheon meeting in order to check them out.
I knew about their “Service above Self” motto and their international student exchange program, but had no idea how much fun they had. I learned that a number of their members had even met at the club, and subsequently married. Surprising! They bought my lunch and invited me back which made me feel both sated and welcomed. There was no hint of partisanship, which I found a refreshing and needed change. The main goal seemed to be benefiting the local community and even the world. At the end of the meeting, members recited (from memory!) what they call The Four Way Test which is: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
These were ideas that I could get behind. So I joined, and my expectations have been wildly exceeded. Besides making friends, they offered my musical partner and me the chance to perform on a couple of occasions, and then gave us (The Elderly Brothers) standing ovations! As far as “service above self” goes, I joined the Pediatric Mental Health Committee which is partnering with Children's Hospital to provide more professionals to help youngsters in desperate need of support.
There are other fine service organizations available as well. You might consider Kiwanis, The Elks, The Lions, The Optimists, or others. But for me, the answer was the Rotary Club which meets at noon on Thursdays at the Lone Tree Golf Club. Lunch is free for newcomers and the friendships, and the welcome are very genuine. Perhaps we'll meet there?
