When I ran for Colorado House District 44 two years ago, it involved more than a year of campaigning and understanding all the important issues. Guns in the hands of teachers was rejected by our then superintendent and sheriff. Now the tides may be turning in Douglas County unless we vote for unaffiliated candidate Mike Phibbs for sheriff, who believes that officers who are well trained, armored and able to apprehend a perpetrator should be the only ones to carry and use the guns in schools.
Teachers’ job is to teach, not be law enforcers with far less training than officers and no body armor or similar reaction training. His plans are well spelled out to provide safety guards and protections for our schools and our children.
I support Phibbs in this position. If you do too, take action. Write postcards, put up yard signs, donate and most of all vote for Mike Phibbs. He has proven experience and leadership as a sheriff and community organizer with over 30 years in law enforcement, with 16 of those years as a police chief. He holds a master’s degree in a law enforcement-related field and has trained with the FBI National Academy. He has served eight years on the Colorado Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) working with the Colorado legislature on every bill related to law enforcement and public safety. This is a critical race with real-life consequences.
