Letter - Honor our teachers

There is a special teacher retiring this month. For 23 years she has faithfully showed up to teach grade school art and then high school ceramics. This included seven years at Roxborough Elementary School and 16 years at ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch.

She experienced many things. Some horrific, some sublime. Through it all, she has fulfilled her contract with adults and students with remarkable strength and conviction.

Some highlights for me include daily sharing by her of how she made a difference in the lives of her students. You see, observing a child “getting it” for the first time is shown all over their faces that light up and their eyes open wide in recognition.

She delighted in her seminar with which she mentored students throughout their four-year high school career. This culminates in her personally handing each seminar student their diplomas during their graduation ceremony. Mission accomplished. She planned her retirement to coincide with just such a graduation of the most recent four-year seminar. 2022 is that year.

Her retirement has been long planned. Her retirement is well deserved. Evidence of the impact she has had on students involves seeing them in tears upon learning of her retirement. Don’t go, they say. Her reply is “it is simply time.”

God bless her for a career of outstanding teaching in the midst of two periods of school district political upheaval and an unexpected global pandemic. The latter necessitated pivoting to online teaching of ceramics by creating an entirely new curriculum matching the remote teaching reality. It is important to note that traditional pottery with real clay is simply impossible to do online.

This special teacher is my beloved wife Cathy. She is special to me and evidently special to dozens of students that seek her out as they grow into adults. Please join me in honoring all teachers for they see a hopeful future in the eyes of the young.
