Letter to the editor: Douglas County commissioners made right call

Douglas County is wealthier, healthier, and now smarter than Arapahoe and Adams based on the county commissioners' decision to be the first to withdraw from the Tri-County Health Department. In response to the article “Douglas County wants divorce from health agency,” what value can the Tri-County department provide that Douglas County cannot provide for itself? Tri-County has demonstrated that it is too big with non-elected bureaucrats to fairly represent Douglas County and it is probably only a matter of time before Arapahoe and Adams follow suit. How much has the Tri-Counties of Douglas, Arapahoe, and Adams changed in 54 years of affiliation, i.e., since 1966 when Douglas County was all farmland and farmers took turns as county commissioners?

We should appreciate the current three Douglas County commissioners who are not bending with the liberal winds to conform, but who see what is obviously best for the health and well-being of county residents. Creating a Douglas County Health Department isn't about the mandate to wear face masks, it's about a Tri-County administration that has demonstrated it's not accountable to the people it serves.

Who knows, in a future pandemic it could be the Douglas County Health Department that is first to require face masks, but then it will be a decision made by the people of Douglas County.
