Horizon's bid at state softball comes up short


AURORA -- Horizon's softball team was able to rally twice in the state 5A tournament for wins Oct. 21 at Aurora Sports Park.

But the Hawks couldn't solve the eventual state champion Legend High School Titans in the semifinals Oct. 22 and saw their season come to an end.

Hadley Hudson's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Hawks a come-from-behind, 5-3 win over Castle View in the tournament opener. Alyssa Haberstroh grounded into a sixth-inning double play to tie the score and set up the seventh-inning heroics.

Madison Vollmar finished with two hits and an RBI. Hudson was the winning pitcher in relief. She struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of work. Vollmar started the game for Horizon and struck out seven.

Horizon spotted Chatfield a 4-1 lead in the quarterfinal game before rallying to beat the Chargers 13-6. The Hawks put up seven runs in the fifth inning. Lilly Mohr singled home two runs in the decisive rally. Vollmar reached base on a sacrifice and an error that brought home another run. Hudson and Lily Simmons doubled home a pair of runs.

Allie Medrano had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Alexis Mohr had three hits and an RBI. Simmons and Hudson finished with two base hits and drove in two runs. Hudson was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts.

Legend beat the Hawks 7-2 in the 5A semifinals Oct. 23, thanks in part to a four-run fifth inning.

The Hawks scored their runs in the third inning. Madison Shama led off the frame with a home run. Medrano added a one-out home run.

The Titans' fifth-inning rally included an RBI single from K. English, M. Harrington's RBI after she was hit by a pitch, a scoring fly ball from E. Harrington and a wild pitch that produced a run.

Shama finished with two hits. Medrano had a base hit and an RBI for the Hawks. Vollmar struck out five in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Horizon finished the season with a record of 26-2.
