Pandemic continues to cancel blood drives while the need increases
More than 200 blood drives continue to be canceled each week because of the pandemic, including about 20 a week in Colorado, but the need for blood has returned to pre-pandemic levels. There is an urgent need for donors to help new mothers experiencing childbirth complications, grandmothers battling cancer, sisters with chronic blood disorders and other patients. Those who receive a Food and Drug Administration authorized COVID-19 vaccine can give blood immediately if other eligibility requirements are met.
Donate for Mothers in May
Colorado resident Lily was familiar with high-risk pregnancies but was unprepared for how the birth of her daughter, Yamie, unfolded in 2019. As a scheduled C-section began, the doctor noticed something wasn’t right and in minutes her husband was whisked away and a team of medical staff rushed in. After doctors gave her eight units of blood products during an emergency hysterectomy, she woke up six hours later, and was finally able to meet her new daughter. “I am an Accreta Survivor thanks to the selfless people who donated blood and saved my life,” Lily said.
All donors can give in honor of a mom in their life in May. Learn more at vitalant.org/donateformothers.
“Trauma and accident victims, cancer patients and those now undergoing previously postponed surgeries may all need blood,” Vitalant Mountain Division Vice President Anne Burtchaell said. “There is an increased need for blood donations as life begins to return to normal for some. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially type O—the most transfused blood type.”
