Hitting the waves

What does 150 cubic feet of water per second look like? Not much from above — enough to channel the South Platte River about eight feet wide at River Run Park beside Oxford Avenue.

But from a surfboard, it looks like a lot more.

Surfers, paddleboarders, canoeists and tubers by the score splashed through the park’s boat chutes on June 28, beating the 90-plus degree heat.

“It’s cool to actually put the river to use,” said Nate Goodhard of Denver after wiping out on his surfboard. “I haven’t taken advantage of it most of my life. I’m not very good at surfing yet, but this is how you get better. I’ll be ready the next time I go to the real beach.”
