Fort Lupton's girls soccer got its first league win, something the Bluedevils didn’t accomplish last season

FORT LUPTON - Halfway through the season, the Fort Lupton High School girls soccer team has shown much improvement compared to he same point from last season.

Despite starting the season with three losses to DSST-Byers, Prospect Ridge Academy and Dawson School, the Bluedevils bounced back with road wins in their following games.

“We had two good wins against Manual and Bennett, very solid wins, I think we are middle of the pack team when it comes to the league,” Fort Lupton  coach Archie Suniga said. “I think we’ve made some good steps up.”

FLHS  showed the progress with the first league win of the season against the Englewood Pirates April 14, an important home win with a score of 4-2 after losing their first league match against Eagle Ridge Academy two days earlier.

Last season Fort Lupton had an overall record of 1-8-1 and finished last in the Colorado League without any league wins. Despite having some players unavailable due to injury and a goalkeeper who stepped up to the line without any prior experience in goal, coach Suniga is confident that his team will get more wins down the road.

“Season so far is going well. The girls are working hard, they’re excited for it. They’ve improved from things from last year to this year," Suniga said. "I think there’s definitely a few more wins out there in the season before this thing is all over.”

The Bluedevils will look to continue their winning ways next week as they face off against Skyview April 19, after press time, and Thornton April 21.

“I think the girls will finish strong as always, they work hard. Like I said I expect a few more wins out of this and hopefully finish middle of the league which will be a good improvement for the girls. We haven’t finished that high in the league in a few years so it’ll be a good improvement.”
