Girls basketball: Golden beats Prairie View

Golden High School built too big a lead for Prairie View in the opening round of the first Nate Howard Memorial Basketball tournament at PVHS Dec. 2.
The Demons shaded the ThunderHawks 41-33. GHS led by as much as 16 points early in the fourth quarter. The ThunderHawks cut the lead in half – largely on free throws – before Golden prevailed.
Anna Kennedy led the Demons with 10 points. Kempley Wellman and Madison Bates added nine. Briana Robles led the ThunderHawks with 12 points, including a 3-pointer. Hannah DeShazer scored five.
“We are so new right now,” said PVHS coach Sam Mackall. “We have a lot of players from last year who are underclassmen. Right now, it’s a matter of trying to mesh them together. We had the opportunities.
We were in the game. The percentage was way low, and missing 19 free throws doesn’t help. It was really bad.”
PVHS had its shots.
“Almost every possession, we had a look or a good look,” Mackall said. “We just didn’t convert. It comes down to finding a range and knowing our limitation. I don’t know if it’s rushing a shot. It’s the newness of the team. We don’t have the same five as last year. We only have two returners. Right now, it’s going to be some bugs.”
PVHS won its first game of the season, a 34-24 win over future Front Range League opponent Mountain Range.
“We’re so young, we don’t know strengths and weaknesses yet,” Mackall said. “I’m happy with our defensive play the last game (against MRHS). It wasn’t too bad this game when we started digging down and doing what we needed to do. Offensively, I’m happy. We got shots up. It’s more of a mental block right now.”
PVHS has the rest of this week off. The ThunderHawks host Legend High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16.
“I liked that we got a lot of shots up,” Mackall said. “I like how we played the defense. We more than doubled them in the fourth quarter. We were right there. We couldn’t get over the hump. To be fouled so much and not convert, that’ll take it out of any team.”
