Football: Poudre spoils BHS homecoming

BRIGHTON – It has been a work in progress for the Brighton HIgh School football team this season.

The Bulldogs lost their homecoming football game 17-0 to the Poudre Impalas Sept. 16 and dropped their fourth game of the season.

First-year coach Michael Brown wants more consistently from his team, but also understands that it is a learning experience for his young and inexperienced squad.

“We are playing a lot of first-year players, and they make some moments of mental lapses,” Brown said. “We will continue to work to fix our mistakes.”

The inexperience showed against an Impalas squad that has been on a roll of late, outscoring their previous three opponents 55-16.

Poudre did much of its damage in the first half, taking advantage of Brighton’s inexperience to score two touchdowns through the air and go up 14-0 at halftime.

Offensively, Brighton struggled to move down the field. A possession in the first half ended with an interception, and the Bulldogs only mustered one first down in the second half.

“We keep making mental mistakes on offense that put us behind schedule,” the coach said. “We need to clean up our play and quit helping the opposing team stop our drives.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs did come up with a couple of big plays in the contest. Dayton Dahlberg got an interception, and Brighton held PHS to only a touchdown in the second half. But Brown would like more consistently from its squad.

“Our defense, like the rest of our team, is on a roller coaster right now,” the coach said. “We need to get our play to be more level.”

Brighton faces another challenge next week when undefeated Broomfield comes to town for a non-league matchup. Game time is 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.
