Elbert craft fair, plant sale benefit school

Booster Club’s annual event held in historic building

The Elbert School was the beneficiary of funds raised April 30 in the 12th annual Elbert Booster Club event.

The club held a Spring Craft Fair and Plant Sale at the historic mercantile building in downtown Elbert. The event has varied over the years, with many previous years featuring silent auctions.

The yearly event is hosted by the Elbert School Booster Club and is one of their largest sources of fundraising for the year. Money raised during the event is used to enhance and expand the academic, social, and athletic programs that are available to each student at Elbert School District #200.

At the Craft Fair and Plant Sale, the Booster Club raised money from vendor fees and from half of the sale of the plants. The other half of the plant sales went toward the Elbert Woman’s Club. The Booster Club also received money from the sale of homemade breakfast burritos that were sold at the event.

Teachers and organizations within the school can request special funds for things like field trips, hosting speakers, or decorations for prom. The Booster Club meets each month to consider the submitted requests and then funds are dispersed.

In a phone interview from April 29, Elbert School Business Manager and School Board Secretary Bev McGuire shared the function of the Booster Club and how they work to help the school thrive.

“Our boosters are fantastic. They help the school afford to do the kinds of things that teachers cannot pay for, or the budget doesn’t allow for,” said McGuire. “All of their fundraising really helps the school.”

The event was a huge success, according to members of the Booster Club. By 10:30 a.m., only an hour and a half after the start of the event, many of the plants had already been sold. “The plants have been going fast,” said Elbert Booster Club Treasurer Wendy Walp. “About half of them are gone already.”

The Craft Fair and Plant Sale also served as a general community event, bringing together residents of Elbert and nearby towns to socialize. “Things like this are wonderful community events for people to get together,” said Walp. McGuire shared a similar sentiment with Walp, saying: “A lot of what the Booster Club does really helps give back to the community as well, like providing entertainment or a place to shop.”

The Elbert Woman’s Club will be holding a similar plant sale on May 22 at their monthly breakfast event from 8 a.m. to noon at the Russell Gates Mercantile Building in Elbert.
