Court hearing rescheduled for man accused of shooting Jeffco Sheriff's K-9

The 29-year-old man who reportedly killed a Jefferson County Sheriff K-9 and pointed a gun at a Golden police officer has had his preliminary hearing rescheduled to April 11.

Eduardo Romero, of Lakewood, was arrested Feb. 13 for reportedly fleeing police near the Colorado School of Mines campus and shooting K-9 Graffit, who was trying to apprehend him.

The District Attorney's Office has filed eight charges against him, including felony charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, identity theft, motor vehicle theft and menacing. His bond was set at $300,000 cash only.

Romero's preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 17, but was continued to 10 a.m. April 11 at the Jefferson County Courthouse. A preliminary hearing determines whether there’s enough evidence against the defendant for the case to proceed through the judicial system.

According to Romero’s arrest affidavit, police initially contacted him as a suspected DUI case on Feb. 13. He fled police custody and hid near the Mines campus, admitting later that he knew he had multiple warrants for his arrest.

Despite the proximity to campus, Mines officials have clarified Romero is not associated with the university.

After he was arrested, investigators reportedly found that he was driving a stolen car and carrying an ID that was not his own.

The affidavit stated Romero has a recent criminal history of forgery, theft and DUI cases. He also has a revoked driver’s license as a habitual traffic offender.

K-9 Graffit, who’d been with JCSO since 2015, died at the scene Feb. 13.

Deputy Zachary Oliver, his handler, has described how Graffit was a very driven and obedient dog, who never backed down from a task. He was a very social dog who loved attention both with Oliver's family and JCSO deputies.

"He was my partner, my best friend, and most of all, my family," Oliver said at Graffit's memorial service Feb. 27. " ... He gave his life that day. He took a bullet that wasn't meant for him."

The sheriff's office has set up a memorial fund in Graffit's honor, and all donations made through March will be in his honor. For more information, visit jeffcosheriff.co/GraffitFund.
