AURORA -- Legacy High School advanced to the double-elimination portion of the state 5A baseball palyoffs by upsetting Regis on the Raiders' field June 14.
The Lightning face Mountain Vista at noon Friday, June 18, at Cherry Creek High School. A Legacy win means a 3:00 game June 18. A Legacy loss moves the Lightning into a noon contest Saturday, June 19. Heritage and Fairview are the other teams in Legacy's end of the draw.
Legacy built a 5-0 lead through its first six turns at bat. Brandon Sanchez, Landon Sehr, Clayton Shuck and Blake Roberts drove in runs as the Lightning pounded out nine hits. Sehr struck out five in his role as the starting pitcher.
Regis came alive in the last of the sixth after Legacy changed pitchers. Charlie Rogan and Alec Willis drove in runs. Max Valdez started off the rally with a home run.
Sanchez and Macully Sehr's RBI base hits gave the Lightining some breathing room in the top of the seventh. Sehr pitched the last two innings to pick up the save. Landon Sehr got the win with five strikeouts in five innings.
The Lightning dispatched Grand Junction 6-1 in the tournament opener. LHS received eight bases on balls and made the most of four base hits.
Cale Claridge and Cole Walker had base hits and two RBIs in the win over Grand Junction. Sanchez and Roberts also drove in runs. Walker struck out three in 4 2/3 innings of pitching. Connor Murray had three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Walker Naramore had two hits for the Tigers.
