Candidate profile: Michael Gunstanson

For Lakewood City Council Ward 5

Profession: Digital Marketer

Residence: Ward 5

Campaign Website:

Why are you seeking this office?

Because I want to change the way the city treats its citizens. I’m tired of watching as neighborhood after neighborhood has had to sue the city (2090 Wright St., White Fence Farm, etc.) just to get it to do the right thing. As a Council member I believe I can ensure that citizen’s voices are heard and they are dealt with fairly and with dignity.

What makes you the best person for the job?

I have strong ties to the community. I’ve owned a local business in Ward 5 and many of my former customers are my constituents. I have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with my neighbors trying to fight city hall, from the 2090 Wright St. park fiasco to the Schnell Farm to the city’s play for trash collection. And I will continue to be there for the citizens when elected. After all, they ARE the boss.

What are your top three priorities if elected?

Increase police force by 40 officers (and place a sub-station in Belmar); stop Bear Creek Lake Park expansion; reform Metro Districts.

Has city hall done an appropriate job in implementing the citizen-approved growth ordinance?

Absolutely not!!!

What is one part of the city that you feel could definitely use more council attention, and why?

Ward 3. It borders Denver, so Denver’s crime spills over to Lakewood through this corridor. It has some of our most economically challenged citizens. It definitely could use some love.
