Adapted athletics students take to the football field

Jeffco Schools adapted athletics students from across the district competed Oct. 20 in Flag Football Day at Trailblazer Stadium and Creighton Middle School.

“These kids, often times they get to practice their skills in the classes, but they don’t get to actually play it in a real life setting,” said Katie Thompson, adapted physical education teacher For Jeffco Schools. “They like to show off their skills, interacting with their peers who are like them or who are different from them. And it really works on a lot of gross motor, social emotional stuff that we all need especially after the past year.”

The adapted physical education program teaches students with physical disabilities as well as cognitive delays. The curriculum mirrors that of general education. Once a month, all the schools get together for a competitive event, where the students can put their new athletic skills to the test.
