5A softball: Horizon sails through to state tournament

A happy group of Horizon Hawks celebrate their second CHSAA 5A regional round playoff win over Ralston Valley Oct. 16 in Thornton. The win sends Horizon into the state 5A tournament this week at Aurora Sports Park. Pairings are due Monday, Oct. 18.

Horizon High School has a seat at the table for this week's state 5A tournament. It begins Friday, oct. 23, at Aurora Sports Park, East Colfax Avenue east of Tower Road.

The Hawks beat Highlands Ranch 14-1, behind four RBIs from Madison Vollmar and three more from Lily Mohr. Hadley Hudson threw a four-hitter to pick up the win.

The Hawks also beat Ralston Valley 8-2 to qualify for state. Allie Medrano had three hits and two RBIs. Lilly Mohr had one hit and drove in a pair. Alexis Mohr had two hits and an RBI. Vollmar threw a complete game and struck out five.
