Alarmism is a thing. We are accustomed to it in the winter ahead of a snowstorm because it sells. An increasing dose of climate change propaganda is now being relentlessly administered related to weather that may be somewhat unusual, but definitely within normal variability. Climate refers to weather patterns over a 30-year period.
In recent weeks, floods in Vermont, a heat wave in the Southwest, and a fire in Maui were blamed on climate change. The suggestion is that it is human-caused, usually without saying so. No evidence is presented, ever. Most people know that floods, heat waves, fires and every other type of weather regularly occur somewhere in the world and always have. But a narrative repeated often becomes a fact to a certain segment of the populace.I for one, acknowledge that the climate always has and always will change. Nothing humans do from this point forward will create an unchanging climate.
Dr. Judith Curry, Professor Emeritus and former chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is a reformed alarmist. She discussed the “manufactured consensus of scientists at the request of policymakers” in an interview last year. She said, “People who think that they can control the climate… It’s just a pipe dream. Even if we went to net zero, we would barely notice. It would be hard to detect any change in the climate. The climate is going to do what the climate’s going to do.”
Countless politicians, celebrities, a teenager with no scientific training, and even “climate scientists” have made apocalyptic catastrophic predictions that have not stood the test of time.
My humble and likely futile request, shouldn’t we ask that our elected officials specifically and scientifically explain why Dr. Curry is wrong before enacting policies that purport to limit CO2 emissions? After all, it would be a fool’s errand to implement a solution to a non-problem.
In his last interview in 1996, Carl Sagan said, “We’ve arranged a society on science and technology in which nobody understands anything about science and technology, and this combustible mixture of ignorance and power sooner or later is going to blow up in our faces. I mean, who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don’t know anything about it.”
