As it snowed on my car last night, I was reminded that spring in Colorado is a little different than a lot of other places. Around here, April showers may bring May flowers, but they can also make you sorry you put your snow shovel away so far in the back of the garage. But, May is just around the corner.
May. Hmmm, one of the worst mountain blizzards I was ever stuck in happened in May several years ago. OK, you might want to wait until the 4thof July to stash all your winter stuff away. Just sayin’.
But looking ahead, there is one date that jumps out this year, and that’s May 8th. It’s going to be Mother’s Day. Yes, it’s another one of those holidays that change dates every year and you can never remember when they happen.
So, let’s look ahead to some fun things you can do here in Golden to help make it a nice and festive occasion for the Mom’s in your life. How about taking Mom to a nice concert somewhere?
Well, you’re in luck, because there are three good ones scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend!
The first one is the Golden Concert Choir’s Spring Concert they are calling “What a Wonderful World.” That’s because the famous song is part of what they will be singing as the embark on a musical journey through some easy, breezy classic tunes — titles like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Sway,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Seven Bridges Road,” “All That Jazz,” “Proud Mary,” “I Got Rhythm” and more. The Golden Concert Choir is directed by David Bell and features accompanist Kris Wittry.
It’s going to be happening at 4 p.m. May 7 at the Calvary Episcopal Church located at 1320 Arapahoe St. here in Golden. Tickets run Adults $15, Seniors and Students $10, Children $5 with kids under 6 admitted free. As an added bonus, free pizza from Mannie and Bo’s will be served after the concert.
You can find out more and order tickets by visiting goldenconcetchoir.org or by calling 303-747-7464.
On May 8, you can take Mom to see the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra’s Season Finale that is being referred to as the Maestro’s Favorites concert. It’s going to feature Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” Copeland’s “Appalachian Spring,” Moncayo’s “Huapango” and Marquez’s “Danzón No. 2.” My spell check just went ballistic when I typed all that in.
Conducted by Maestro William Morse, this one will be at 3 p.m. at the Green Center on the Colorado School of Mine’s campus. Tickets and more information are available by visiting jeffsymphony.org or by calling 303-278-4237. They run Adults $25, Seniors (62+) $20, Students $10 and Children (6+) $5.
Now, if you want to get a little more active on Mother’s day, you can take Mom dancing at the Buffalo Rose for the Swing Night Supper Club. That’s a special evening for fans of Big Band and swing dancing. There will be dinner specials starting at at 4 p.m. with two and a half hours of live Big Band Jazz from 5 to 7:30 p.m. by the Flatirons Jazz Orchestra – featuring Deborah Stafford. You can dance or just listen to the great Swing Era music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and more.
Tickets are $15 online or $20 at the door. All ages are welcome, but kids under 18 need a guardian. You can, once again, find out more and order tickets online at buffalorosegolden.com. Buffalo Rose is located at 1119 Washington Ave. in Downtown Golden.
