The Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Wheat Ridge Cultural Commission are looking for six emerging young artists to have their artwork showcased at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center.
Artists of emerging or amateur status who are 18 years old or younger and currently enrolled in school are encouraged to apply to the Youth Mural Contest.
To enter, artists must submit a sketch in the theme “Nature and Advocacy for our Planet.” Artist sketches will be selected and determined by artistic quality that fits the community feel and Recreation Center branding. Parameters include but are not limited to, no nudity, gang-related, violence, political themes, etc.
The selection committee will include judges from the Wheat Ridge community, Jefferson County schools, the city’s Cultural Commission and City staff.
The deadline to enter has been extended to April 29. Selected artists will be contacted no later than 30 days after the submission deadline.
Selected artists will be invited to attend a planing and prep session, and be given five days to complete their murals and prepare for award selection. Artists will complete paintings from June 6 – 12.
The Cultural Commission will supply general paint supplies, but artists are welcome to bring their own.
Six selected works of art will be placed inside the Children’s Pavilion castle at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center where there is available curved wall space for four murals measuring 41” wide x 54.5” high and two murals measuring 30” wide x 54.5” high.
All artists will receive a $200 stipend, and 1st-3rd place will receive additional prizes including a Wheat Ridge Recreation Center Annual Pass for the first place winner.
