Legacy’s Mason Dickerson wanted at least two things when he set out to look for a college, and he found them at the Colorado School of Mines.
“I wanted to go to Colorado School of Mines because they were interested in me early in recruiting,” Dickerson said. “The idea of being set for life after football was a major aspect to why I chose Mines too. Also, the staff there is very tight and has a great culture on the team.”
He took a campus visit.
“And when I went on my official visit I really liked Golden, and going up with my good friend, Braelon Tate, we both loved it and wanted to commit,” Dickerson said. “I was able to meet some of my future teammates on my visit, and I knew a couple kids in the class before me that went to Mines as well.”
Recruiting during a pandemic has been strange for a lot of high-school athletes.
“I feel like that was the case a little, but it was nice being in contact a lot with the staff during the season, which made me float towards them more before I committed,” he said.
Legacy was 6-5 in the 2021 season and advanced to the first round of the state 5A playoffs. Dickerson ran the ball four times for 20 yards. He also caught 32 passes for 367 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Dickerson also made 48 tackles, 42 of which were solo efforts.
He drew interest from Assumption University (Worcester, Mass.), Colorado Mesa University, Western Colorado University, Chadron (Nebraska) State College, the South Dakota School of Mines, the University of Penn, Empora (Kansas) State and the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Dickerson wants to study either civil engineering or business engineering. He wants to take his degrees and land some internships for future opportunities after school.
“Recruiting was tough because there were so many limited spots this year due to COVID and the transfer portal,” Dickerson said. “But it really made me appreciate the schools that were giving me opportunities and wanted me to go to their school.
“I am a mix of nervous and excited for my next chapter, since it’s going to be something so new,” he added. “But I’m excited to get up there and be with all the guys and compete for a job.”
