State 5A wrestling

Chaparral’s Geoffrey Freeman picked up a 5-3 decision over Legacy’s Gavin Funk to win the state 5A 195-pound wrestling title at Ball Arena.

Funk (37-5) pinned two of his first three opponents en route to the title match. The first was against Legend’s Nathan Grandy in the quarterfinals. Funk’s semifinal pinfall win was against Zach Ferrera of Monarch. The total mat time of those two contests was a bit more than six minutes.,

Elswhere, Legacy’s Andrew Ernst (17-19) didn’t win a match at 120 pounds. Kaiden Sulivan (12-6) won once in three tries. That was against Columbine’s Will Schrader, a 12-4, major decision.

Blake Swearingen had the deepest run of the Lightning state qualifiers. Swearingen (25-9) got to the third round of the consolation bracket before Adams City’s Seth Deaguero beat him 7-5 in overtime. Swearingen’s two wins in the tournament — both in the consolation bracket — were against Mickael Byers of Pine Creek and Andrew Sarno of Grandview.

Ryan Bynarowicz (28-9) won once in three starts at 170 pounds. The win was in the opening round, a 3-2 decision over Columbine’s Darrell Miller.

11 a.m. Feb. 19

DENVER —  Legacy’s Gavin Funk goes for a state 5A wrestling title tonight against  Chaparral’s Geoffrey Freeman. Funk, a senior,  pinned Zach Ferrera of Monarch in 3;00 of the 195-pound semifinals last night.

Blake Swearingen lost to Adams City’s Seth Deaguero in the consolation draw of 152-pounders this morning by a score of 7-5 in overtime. Swewaringen, who lost in the first round Thursday night, bounced back with wins over Pine Creek’s Mickael Byers and Andrew Sarro of Grandview in the consolation rounds last night.

Swearingen finished his season with a record of 25-9.

3 p.m. Feb. 18

DENVER –Legacy’s Gavin Funk earned a spot in tonight’s semifinals at 195 pounds at the state 5A wrestling tournament. He pinned Nathan Sandy of Legend High School in 3;27 of their quarterfinal match. Funk takes on Monarch’s Zach Ferrera later tonight.

Legacy’s Ryan Bynarowicz lost to Roman Cruz of Pomona in the 170-pound quarterfinals this afternoon at the state 5A wrestling tournament. Bynarowicz lost to Monarch’s Charlie Williams 7-5 in overtime. Bybarowicz finished his season with a record of 28-9.

Andrew Ernst, the Lightning’s 120-pounder, lost both his matches  at state, He finished with a mark of 17-19 this season. Kaiden Sullivan won once  — a major (12-4) decision over Columbine’s Will Schrader at 145 pounds. Ernst fnished with a record of 12-8.

Adams City’s Seth Deaguero beat Blake Swearingen 7-5 in overtime this morning in the third round of consolation matches at 152 pounds. Swearingen, who won two straight in the consolation draw after a first-round loss, finished with a mark of 25-8.

9 p.m. Feb. 17

DENVER — Two members of the Lightning wrestling team moved into the quarterfinal round of the state 5A wrestling tournament at Ball Arena Feb. 17.

Ryan Bynarowicz earned a tough, 3-2 decision over Darrell Miller of Columbine at 170 pounds. Bynarowicz faces Roman Cruz of Pomona. Gavin Funk, LHS’ 195-pounder, won by injury default over Eaglecrest’s Dalton Leivian. Funk faces Nathan Sandy of Legend High School.

Elijah Banks of Pine Creek beat Andrew Ernst of the Lightning 7-1 at 120 pounds. Ernst next faces Keegan Beckford of Eaglecrest. Kaemon Gabaldon of Fountain-Fort Carson picked up a 10-7 decision over Legacy’s Juan Diaz at 145 pounds. Diaz next faces Eaglecrest’s John Pohl.

Cale Moore of Grand Junction pinned Legacy’s Blake Swearingen in 1:59 of their 152-pound, first-round match at state. Swearingen faces Mickael Byers of Pine Creek.

Championship quarterfinals and first-round consolation matches begin at 12;45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18.
