KEENESBURG — Fort Lupton’s wrestling team won the Colorado League wrestling championship Feb. 5 at Weld Central High School.

Dmitri Garza- Alarcon (138 pounds), Danny Rodriguez (145), William Alvarado (152), Christopher Galicia (170), Alex Mata (182) won conference titles.

Kaidyn Taylor (132 pounds), Donovan Birmingham (113), Isaac Rodriguez (160), Camren Galicia (195), Kayden  Derbigny (220 and Dylan Jaramillo (285) finished second. Uriel Leon was fifth at 120 pounds.

The Bluedevils almost didn’t get the chance to compete. One wrestler contracted COVID, which put the team in a mandatory quarantine. However, Weld Re-8 Superintendent Alan Kaylor authorized a solution..

“Each wrestler has to be negative (COVID test). If they test negative, they can compete,” Kaylor said.

If anyone tested positive, then that person would have been in quarantine until Thursday, Feb. 10, the day before the regional tournament at Sierra High School.

FLHS’ regional tournament is a two-day meet that begins Friday, Feb. 10, at Sierra High School in Colorado Springs. Other host schools can run theirs in one day, if they choose. The top four wrestlers from each weight class advance to the state 3A meet at Ball Arena in Denver. The state meet begins Thursday, Feb. 17.
