Brighton police are warning of a scam involving fake landlords and fake ads for houses.

A tweet from police said scammers are posing as landlords renting out their homes. They post fake ads for houses for rent on social media and ask prospective tenants to send security deposits and first month’s rent to Zelle, Venmo or similar cash application accounts.

“Once the unsuspecting victim sends their money, they learn the person they have been communicating with is now the homeowner,” the tweet said. “Please be cautious when utilizing such applications and when a deal seems too good to be true.”

Detectives suggest trying to get as much information as possible and trying to meet with the landlord in person before sending money to unknown people.
