• Senior Ana Satchell (#2) goes for a layup against Standley Lake on Jan. 5.
  • Junior Maya Dawson (#13) goes for a layup against Standley Lake on Jan. 5.

Things are not going the way the Conifer girls basketball team had hoped for this season.

Despite offensive improvements, the team has lost its last four games. It played against Wheat Ridge on Dec. 21 and lost 46-19. Coming back from winter break on Jan. 5 in its first home game of the season, it managed to put up more points — 26 — against Standley Lake. still losing to Standley Lake’s 69 points.

This game was followed by one against Green Mountain on Jan. 7. Green Mountain won in dominating fashion 85-12. Meanwhile, the team lost to D’Evelyn on Jan. 11 with a final score of 78-6.

While the team is still looking for its first win of the season, there are signs of improvement on the offensive front. In its first five games, the team had a total of 67 points, with 36 of those points coming in the third game against Steamboat Springs on Dec. 9. For the next four games, the team averaged 22.75 points a game, with its lowest score in that period being 19 points against Wheat Ridge.

“We have been working on plays and just getting those down. We’re starting to show some things with those on the court,” said Maya Dawson, a junior on the team.

Despite that, the team hit a bit of a slump against Green Mountain and D’Evelyn, scoring a total of 18 points. However, it should be noted that these are some of the top teams in the division with Green Mountain being undefeated and D’Evelyn only having lost one game this season.

Nonetheless, it is still apparent that Conifer needs to see development on the part of its defense. Over its first 11 games, it has given up an average of 59.4 points a game.

The team’s game against Littleton on Jan. 14 was canceled due to the weather, so the next two games will be against Golden on Jan. 19, followed by Evergreen on Jan. 21.

Senior Ana Satchell said the team is “starting to come together,” and hopefully that will reflect more on the court.
