Two suspects are in custody after a carjacking led to an overnight standoff with the Arvada Police on Dec. 21. The standoff took place on the 6000 block of Estes Street and was resolved at around 9 a.m., approximately 8 hours after the initial call, according to Arvada Police Department Public Information Officer Dave Snelling.
Around 1 a.m., police received a call of a suspicious vehicle on Estes Street and arrived on the scene shortly after. Responding officers found a black Ford pickup truck and learned that the suspect associated with that vehicle was armed and went into a house.
Officers learned that both suspects have outstanding felony warrants. One is a fugitive out of the Colorado Department of Corrections as an escapee and the other is wanted on felony drug warrants out of Denver.
The suspects stayed in the house and refused to come out for hours. Patrol tried negotiating with them and eventually called in the Jefferson County S.W.A.T. team. After about 8 hours of deliberations, the suspects came out separately before 9 a.m. within an hour of each other.
Snelling said that one suspect has minor burns on his hands because there was a small fire inside the house but declined to give more information on the fire. No civilians were injured.
“This is another example of how our community is impacted by auto theft,” Snelling said.
Both suspects are in custody at the Jefferson County Jail and will face charges from the carjacking and standoff as well as outstanding charges from their previous warrants.
