Ralston Valley High School was put on lockout due to six threats received through Colo.’s Safe2Tell anonymous reporting system on April 19. The threats were received at approximately 12:50 p.m. and the school was put on lockout for over 45 minutes.
A lockout involves closing off a school’s exterior doors while classes continue inside.
Arvada Police said the threat was investigated and determined that there was no danger to the school community. Students were released through a safe release plan.
Four more threats were received on Tuesday at approximatley 10 a.m., triggering another Ralston Valley lockout, according to Arvada Police Department Public Information Officer Dave Snelling.
The set of threats were received by Ralston Valley School Resource Officer John Zubrinic and came from outside the school, said Snelling. APD officers and Jefferson County School District R1 security officers were dispatched to RVHS, Pomona High School, and Arvada West High School. Pomona and Arvada West did not go into lockout.
“Everything went well according to plan,” said Snelling. “Officers responded, R1 schools responded. A strategic plan was made for a safe release and kids were released to buses and the parking lot, surrounded by cops and security.
“The school resource officer (Zubrinic) was in the school at the time,” Snelling said, “and was able to respond, be in contact with staff and start working with them.”
Arrest made
On Tuesday morning the Arvada Police Department arrested a female suspect on Ralston Valley’s campus. The suspect is a minor and was not found with any weapons or paraphernalia on her person.
The APD was not able to confirm whether or not the suspect is an RVHS student. APD does believe the suspect is the same person that threatened the school on Monday, due to the “tone and tenor” of the threats, according to Snelling.
