AURORA — The anticipated snowstorm this weekend prompted the Colorado High School Activities Association to postpone the class 3A girls swimming and diving meet until Monday, March 15.
Forecasts are still uncertain. The range of snow depths covers most everything from 5 inches to more than 2 feet in the Denver area.
The schedule for the meet won’t change. As of 2 p.m. March 9, there have been no changes to the state 4A and 5A swim meets. The 4A meet is Friday, March 12, and the 5A meet is Thursday, March 11.
All three meets will be at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, East 136th Avenue and Holly Street in Thornton.
In a tweet, CHSAA assistant commissioner Justin Saylor said the reason to postpone the 3A meet, in part, was due to the travel arrangements for several of the schools.
“With schools traveling from Moffat County, Gunnison, La Junta, etc. for this meet, the decision has been made to postpone,” the tweet said. “VMAC is an Adams 12 Five Star District Facility and in all likelihood if the storm is half as bad as they are predicting, the facility and district would be closed Saturday, potentially stranding schools in the metro area for several days. To allow schools an opportunity to plan, we wanted to make this decision as early as possible.”
CHSAA has not made any alternate plans for the state basketball tournaments later in the week. The main concern would be the Elite 8 games set for March 13. The final four is Tuesday, March 16.
We’ll update later.
