Council’s gun storage law applauded
As a gun owner in Littleton, I want to personally thank the Littleton City Council for passing the safe storage law for local gun retailers. This critical law will undoubtedly save lives and keep our community safe by keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals. I applaud you for holding gun stores accountable and enforcing the annual safe storage license to prove their compliance. Just as pharmacies are required to secure controlled substances, it is past time for gun retailers to be held responsible for securing their firearms.
Gun thefts occur in staggering numbers and often divert guns into an underground market where people with dangerous histories are able to easily obtain firearms. Nationally, the number of gun thefts from licensed gun dealers has increased more than the number from any other source (i.e. cars, individual homes). Between 2013 and 2017, the number of firearms stolen in gun-dealer burglaries more than doubled from 3,355 to 7,841, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Again, thank you for your commitment to keeping our Littleton community safe and your leadership in common-sense gun reform. As a Littleton resident and advocate for gun violence prevention, there’s nothing more important than the safety of our families and neighbors.
