UPDATE: The Lakewood Police Department has identified the man who was killed on Jan. 12 as 32-year-old Ty Spencer Walvatne-Donahey. Police say Walvatne-Donahey, a suspect in attempted car robbery, did shoot at agents at least twice as police agents returned fire and killed him.
An unidentified suspect is dead after being shot by Lakewood Police, Jan. 12, after officers responded to a report of someone trying to break into cars at Prestige Imports, 9201 W. Colfax Avenue.
According to Lakewood Police Department Spokesman, John Romero, officers responded to the business, but were unable to locate the suspect, described as a white male in his mid-20s – 30s.
A short time later, officers were called to the Safeway at 9160 W. Colfax Avenue for a report of a robbery in progress. Again, no suspect was found and the investigation found no indication a robbery had occurred.
As officers were conducting the Safeway investigation, they spotted a man matching the Prestige suspect’s description across the street from the Safeway. Romero said Officers attempted to contact the suspect, who then fled to a driveway at a nearby residence in the 1500 block of Glen Dee Drive. The suspect produced a handgun and pointed it at the officers, who in return, fired on the suspect, who died at the scene.
Multiple officers were on the scene after the incident. Colfax remained open in both directions. In a press conference at the scene, Romero said the officers were not wearing body cameras during the incident.
The suspect’s name has not been released at this time. As with all officer involved shootings, the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting. The officers who fired on the suspect will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
