Top-ranked Cherry Creek played No. 8 Grandview in a Centennial League football game on a chilly, rainy night at the Stutler Bowl on Oct. 22.
Creek’s first drive after taking the opening kickoff set the tone for the game as the Bruins went 80 yards in five plays to score and went on to record a 37-0 victory to remain unbeaten at 3-0 for the season.
The two minute, 50 second first drive ended when quarterback Julian Hammond tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to Chase Penry.
“I thought we handled tough conditions pretty well,” said Bruins’ head coach Dave Logan. “The defense tackled well and offensively I thought our execution was for the most part good.”
Hammond threw four touchdown passes during the game which featured five intercepted passes, three by Creek and two by the Grandview Wolves, and several dropped passes.
Penry, who has committed to play next season for the University of Colorado, hauled in two of Hammond’s TD passes and finished with five catches for 94 yards. Gunnar Helm also had two TD receptions including a 60-yard strike in the third quarter. Helm had eight catches during the game for 137 yards.
Hammond, Creek’s senior basketball standout who has agreed to play for the CU basketball program, connected on 19 of 26 passes for 274 yards and four TDs. He was intercepted twice.
Running back James Walker rushed for 104 yards on 17 carries and also ran for a two-point conversion.
Bruins backup quarterback Marte Russell had a 10-yard scoring run to wrap up the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Grandview, which saw its record fall to 1-2, had possession in the red zone twice during the game, but two fourth-down attempts were stopped by the Bruins’ defense.
Creek is scheduled to play Overland on Oct. 30 at the Stutler Bowl while Grandview, which lost 43-42 to No. 5 Eaglecrest in the second game of the season, faces Smoky Hill on Oct. 30 at Legacy Stadium.
