Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating the death of an infant who was brought to Sky Ridge Medical Center last week.
The infant was being cared for in an unlicensed child care facility in Parker along with 16 other children, according to a complaint report from the Colorado Department of Human Services.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson stated it is an ongoing investigation and no more information will be released at this time.
DHS said it served a woman identified as the operator of the child care a cease-and-desist letter after the incident occurred. The operator tried to prove to officers she was no longer caring for children in her home, according to the complaint report.
The Lone Tree hospital notified the Douglas County Coroner’s Office of the death at 3:06 a.m. Aug. 26, according to a news release sent by the coroner’s office Aug. 31.
“The coroner’s office has legally identified the infant and an autopsy has been completed,” the release states. “This is an active death investigation being conducted in collaboration with multiple agencies and therefore no further information will be released at this time.”
The DHS complaint report states it received the complaint Aug. 26.
A DHS spokesperson said the department was not aware any “illegal child care” was being provided at the location until after the incident occurred. DHS was notified by the county. Upon notification, DHS served the operator with a cease-and-desist order.
The office stated the autopsy report and coroner’s final ruling will be made available after the investigation is completed, the release states.
