For the first time in more than 100 years, there will be no football at School of Mines this fall.

Instead, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (of which Mines is a member) is hoping games can be played in the spring after the conference announced that football and three other fall sports were being postponed to the spring semester.

On Aug. 6, the RMAC announced that football, volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer were being postponed to the spring while the cross country and men’s and women’s golf seasons will proceed as scheduled (although the championship portion of the golf season will not occur.

According to a statement, the postponement decision was made based on recent NCAA guidelines about when it would be appropriate to resume athletic competition as well as the decision of the Division II Presidents Council to cancel all Division II fall championships. The determination to allow the golf and cross-country to continue with competitions was made based on an NCAA risk ranking that ranked cross country and golf as lower risk than all other false sports.

The RMAC is planning to release details on the structure and scope of competition for the postponed fall sports in the coming weeks, the release said.

“As has been the case throughout the past five months, the RMAC will continue to monitor local and national developments regarding health and safety, along with association guidance to make any necessary adjustments moving forward,” the statement said.
