City or town of residence: Castle Rock, since 2005
Profession: Entrepreneur, CEO of Lead Funding, a specialty real-estate lender
Related elected-office or public-service experience: Served one two-year term in the state Legislature a decade ago. Have been an adjunct business faculty member at Colorado State University.
Why are you seeking this office?
Too many things in Colorado are headed in the wrong direction. I could simply complain along with others, but I have decided to try and make a difference instead. In particular, I want to make health care more affordable, businesses easier to start and operate, and government spending restrained.
What makes you the most qualified person for the position?
In my business career, I have seen the value of diversity in the workforce and employee backgrounds. My own career reflects such diversity. I have built six thriving companies in a variety of industries from tech to finance. Outside business, I served two years in the Legislature, led a successful statewide campaign against higher taxes and taught at two state universities. I have also been an active philanthropist for a wide range of charities. So my unique qualification is in diversity of preparation for the job.
What would your top two priorities be if elected?
I would start by getting Colorado out of the Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) insurance-exchange system. In its place, I would seek block grants to replace Obamacare, focusing on establishment of a system of skilled nurse-practitioner clinics that can provide basic health care more affordably, without insurance. My second priority would be to roll back regulations that hurt small, family and independent businesses. I would also focus on stimulating business start-ups in smaller towns and rural areas, and reducing unnecessarily costly and lengthy apprenticeship requirements for our young workers wanting to enter trades in construction and other technical vocations.
What else should the voters know about you?
I am a devoted family man. Amy and I have three wonderful kids. One is a computer whiz, another is a West Point cadet and the youngest just finished the eighth grade. We do everything together, from watching TV, to attending church, to skiing and loving our two retrievers.
