Letter: Time to elect our mayor

Don't kid yourself. The process of town council appointing our mayor is absolutely and 100 percent elitist; it's a process that undermines the will of the voters, ignores the diversity of our community and - most egregiously - minimizes participation and civic engagement.

I've been a registered voter of this town since 1990. I've seen mayors come and go. Some were great - many contributed to the quality of our town - and some I could have, quite frankly, done without. And I voted for none of them. Furthermore, when it was time to vote for my member of town council, none of the candidates ever answered when I asked "who would you appoint as mayor?" And yes - I asked. Frequently.

But unfortunately, the appointment of mayor has, for the last 30 years, been an "insider" game. Voters have no input and are allowed no opinion.

It's time to stop that.

It's time to trust the voters, trust the process of open elections, and trust that our residents - each and every one of them - have the right to their opinions and the free expression of them.

It's time to elect our mayor.
