City or town of residence: Greeley; born and grew up in Colorado Springs.
Profession: Retired middle-school math teacher in Greeley public schools, current state representative of House District 50.
Related elected-office or public-service experience: Was the former lead bargainer and president of my local teachers' union before running for state representative in HD50, where I have served three terms.
Why are you seeking this office?
I'm running because I want to ensure Colorado's economic growth is shared. Colorado is investing our money in big Wall Street banks, when we should be investing our money in ourselves. Let's increase funding to public education, evaluate starting a public bank and put PERA back on better financial footing.
What makes you the most qualified person for the position?
I am the only candidate with legislative and budgetary experience. I have been a representative for the past seven years in our state House. I serve on the Joint Budget Committee, where I manage our state's $30 billion budget. Additionally, I am proud to be endorsed by the Colorado Education Association and American Federation of Teachers-Colorado, and I am the only union-endorsed candidate in the race. Our endorsements reflect that public-school educators and working-class people trust me with their tax dollars, and this trust is crucial when it comes to managing the state's investments.
What would your top two priorities be if elected?
My top two priorities in office would be to advocate for increased funding to public schools and to ensure that Colorado taxpayer dollars are wisely invested. Our schools are severely underfunded, our teachers are underpaid and overworked, and our at-risk students are going without the resources they need due to TABOR's (Taxpayer's Bill of Rights) disastrous effects. Additionally, I believe that it is the treasurer's most important duty to make sure that our money is safe and wisely invested. This means taking it out of risky Wall Street venture capital funds and banks like Wells Fargo that don't play by the rules.
What else should the voters know about you?
I am the only elected Democrat in Weld County. I have won all my races despite the dark money spent against me. I know how to run races in challenging areas, and I know how to work across the aisle to ensure everyone's voice is heard, no matter their party affiliation.
