Why are you seeking this office?
I am running because the Coroner’s office could better serve the people of Jefferson County. The Coroner must make better information available so that public health priorities can be determined and preventable deaths avoided. The Coroner must also ensure all decedents are treated with the dignity they deserve.
What makes you the most qualified person for the position?
My professional background in issues related to death and dying have prepared me to deal with the day to day realities of performing the job and have made me distinctly aware of what the full scope of the Coroner’s Office is. I feel that I am the only candidate who has a flushed out vision of how to make changes to the way the Coroner’s office operates to truly serve the community. I believe that it is imperative for the Coroner’s office to strike greater balance between serving its law enforcement function and serving its public health function.
What would your top two priorities be if elected?
Information Transparency: I will ensure detailed information is made available to the community regarding deaths in Jefferson County. In addition to reporting and analyzing data surrounding all deaths in the area, I will specifically monitor trends in deaths caused by gun violence and opioid overdose to help shine a light on how prevalent these dangers are.
Also Dignity in Recognition of Gender Diversity: I will create a policy that specifically recognizes transgendered members of our community as their gender identity in death. All those that must go through the Coroner’s Office will be shown the compassion that they deserve.
What else should the voters know about you?
I am truly passionate about the Coroner role and its importance to the community. For me, running for this office is not a vanity project or a phase in my career advancement – I sincerely believe that Jefferson County needs someone in that office that sees the potential that I see.
