Two homes burned in Cascade fire
A structure fire that started in the evening hours of March 23 in Cascade destroyed one home on the Pikes Peak Highway and severely damaged a neighboring home. According to a news release, the Cascade Fire Department had the fire under control Sunday morning. The department also called for backup from the Green Mountain Falls/Chipita Park and Manitou Springs fire departments.
The homeowners were sleeping when the fire broke out; they escaped the home safely but their dog was killed. The second home was partially engulfed in flames and sustained heavy damages. The fire spread into nearby trees but fire crews were able to put them out.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Until firefighters were able to clear away ice that built up on the road in the freezing temperatures during the fire, Fountain Avenue was closed in both directions at Pikes Peak Highway.
